Zombie Bird Pinata – in a Museum!

This monstrous beast of a bird was concocted a couple years ago for my first 3D sculpture class.  I originally made it with another student partner (whose bird was a pretty little thing) which my demonoid creation was stalking for a midnight snack.  All the feathers are real ostrich feathers that my partner donated too (she works at the zoo)!

So the story behind it is that we were assigned to make pinatas for a Mutant Pinata show held by Beatrice Moore at the Bragg’s Pie Factory in Phoenix.  It was a fantastically fun affair, and she’s been putting it on for several years now with hundreds of Pinatas.  Eventually I got an offer to sell my Pinata, and being the poor artist I finally caved, which I now somewhat regret (but I can and will make an even better one some day).  Fortunately the person I sold it to (Susan Copeland) willingly submitted it to an art exhibit, so in the end it was all for the best because I probably would have been too lazy 🙂  It has already traveled the country in one show, and has entered it’s second country-wide show where you see these pictures from.  If you want to see this grizzly mean bastard bird for yourself, all you have to go is drop by opening day (or a few weeks after I’m sure) at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) on October 28th at 7:00pm for the People’s Biennial.  There are a lot of other interesting exhibits to see there besides mine too, so you should go if you live in AZ!

  1. Wow, superb blog layout! How long have you been blogging for? you made blogging look easy. The overall look of your website is fantastic, as well as the content!

  2. Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appeal. I must say you’ve done a amazing job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super fast for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!

  3. Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same outcome.
